Today's Quotes: "As coaches we talk about two things: offense and defense. There is a third phase we neglect, which is more important. It's conversion from offense to defense and defense to offense." - Bobby Knight
Today's Theme: Trapping with a Trailer
This is a good surprise tactic for a team that does not press the entire game. It works well against teams that like to transition quickly after a made basket and send O2 and O3 up the court, leaving just O1 to bring the ball up the court.
Use it as a surprise tactic after a made basket or free-throw, or any dead ball situation.
X2, X3 and X4 quickly sprint up the court to prevent the fast break and a quick transition basket.
X5 harasses the inbound passer, trying to tip/deflect the ball.
X1 pressures O1, and if unable to deny or tip the inbounds pass, forces O1 up a sideline.
After the inbounds pass, X5 sprints to get above the ball, looking for the ideal moment to sprint over and trap the ball with X1 along the sideline.
The trap could occur along the sideline in the back-court, or just over the half-court line.
X3 denies the pass up the sideline.
X2 is also an interceptor, denying the pass to O2.
X4 protects the basket.
. If O1 passes back to O5, X5 sprints over and pressures O5. O5 may not be comfortable handling the ball in the back-court and could be pressured to turn it over.
Meanwhile, X1 denies the pass from O5 back to O1, forcing O5 to bring the ball up.
X2 and X3 deny passes to O2 and O3.
If O4 sprints up to the arc to get the pass, X4 goes with him/her to deny that pass.
